How much is the bottle deposit in Iowa?
Iowa has a 5¢ deposit on each covered can or bottle.
Which containers can I return in Iowa?
Containers of drinks with bubbles and drinks with alcohol. That means beer, soda, wine and liquor sold in Iowa.
Is there a daily limit on bottle returns in Iowa?
Our Iowa sources do not set one daily limit for the whole state. Each redemption center sets its own hours and rules. Call ahead if you have a big load.
Do stores in Iowa have to accept bottle and can returns?
Not always. Stores that sell deposit drinks usually must take back what they sell (Iowa Code 455C.3). Since 2022, a store can say no if:
- It sells ready-to-eat food under a food license.
- It hosts an approved mobile redemption system.
- An approved redemption center is within 10 miles (15 miles in counties of 30,000 people or fewer).
A store that says no must post a sign on its front door. The sign points to the nearest approved center (Iowa Code 455C.4). That is why we only list DNR-approved redemption centers in Iowa.
What law sets Iowa's bottle deposit?
Iowa's Beverage Containers Control Law (Iowa Code chapter 455C; rules at IAC 567-107). The Iowa DNR runs it.
